The thing I like about CJ's education modules (I'm four weeks in, but I have to make up one week) is that he's such an easy going and funny guy. But he made an interesting point today regarding the definition of an -aholic. I always make the comparison of how I like to ride roller coasters; does that make me a coasterholic? CJ pointed out that an alcoholic is someone who exhibits abusive behavior not simply because it creates an altered state in which one feels better, but because real life is just so unbearable. You see, I would agree that I
can and
have, in the past, exhibited abusive behavior. However, it was never because I wanted to abandon reality entirely. It was never because my life had gotten so bad that only by being drunk would being alive be truly bearable. And I think that's what the real definition of an -aholic is: one who seeks a particular altered state (via whatever means one chooses) because real life is unbearable.
