Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

Pink Floyd, "Wish You Were Here"

I was greatly saddened when I heard that one of my favorite writers had passed away.  Heart failure, despite the fact that he was in tip-top shape.  I hate that about life sometimes, but the transcience of it all is what gives it value.  Every now and then your ear will catch wind of some voice in the background, a voice that brings with it a fresh perspective while retaining aged respect.  That was Ralph Wiley to me.  When you hear such a voice, turn around and pay attention because that voice might not be there tomorrow.  I had been looking forward to his analysis on how the weight of drama on the Lakers would prove to be their Grecian downfall against the team-oriented Pistons.  It's Rams vs Pats all over again.  I'm not going to attempt to eulogize the man; I want to offer sincere condolensces to his family.

One issue that Wiley always tackled was race, particularly in how it affected the world of sports.  Having just watched the subtly good Disney movie, "Remember the Titans," I feel robbed of not being able to see if Simmons-Wiley could have the same on-page dynamic that Kornheiser-Wilbon have on screen.  Taught in the trenches, and applicable throughout life, mutual respect can carry you a long way.  I'm rambling and weary.  Some other time.

There exists a version
of myself that chose wisely, that saved the day, that won, that got it right. I am his approximation. I've rounded down.
