There's an
editorial on New Republic that interestingly compares the plight of gay Americans not to the civil rights movement of blacks, but rather that of Jews in America. An interesting comparison; I've never favored the whole black civil rights movement comparison, given that a bottle of champagne and some applause from the crowds outside of City Hall and Will & Grace waiting on the television does not equate being attacked by dogs or flushed with firehoses. Still, I understand how and why the comparison was made, I've just never felt it was appropriate, and that the gay marriage issue should be allowed to shine on in its own light rather than trying to evoke images of civil rights movements of the past.
